Papers of Alfred Roman, 1861-1890.

Correspondence, military telegrams (in code and deciphered), reports, memoranda, and a few printed items relating almost exclusively to the military service of the Confederate general Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard (1818-1893), particularly to his role in the 1st Battle of Bull Run, Shiloh, and the defense of Savannah, Ga., and Petersburg, Va. A few items relate to Confederate strategic decision after the victory at Manassas, the adoption of the Confederate flag and the conflict of opinion between Jefferson Davis and Beauregard. Chiefly letters (1865- ; many in French) from Beauregard to Roman concerning Beauregard's military career, justification of his actions, and the preparation and publication of Roman's book, "General Beauregard's Military Operations" (1884). Beauregard's correspondents include Jefferson Davis, William Joseph Hardee, and John Bell Hood.
